Lights Out for Earth Hour
On March 31, 2007, the World Wildlife Federation and The Sydney Morning Herald invited all individuals, companies, organizations, and government in Sydney, Australia, to turn off their lights for just one hour. More than 2 million residents and businesses participated, resulting in a 10.2% reduction in energy.
Word of the success of this experiment has spread, and on March 29th, 2008, at 8:00 p.m., cities across the U.S., Canada, and throughout the world planned to "turn out the lights."
Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.
This simple act has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world. As a result, at
8pm March 29, 2008 millions of people in some of the world’s major capital cities, including Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tel Aviv united and switched off lights for Earth Hour.
