U.S. stimulus bill includes billions for clean energy
President Barack Obama has signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a $787 billion economic stimulus package that includes approximately $70 billion supporting various renewable energy and energy efficiency programs and projects. According to www.recovery.gov, the web site set up by the White House to allow Americans to learn more about the law and track its implementation, the law will “revive the renewable energy industry and provide the capital over the next three years to eventually double domestic renewable energy capacity,” and it launches “the largest weatherization program in history,” aiming to modernize more than one million homes.
The law authorizes approximately $5 billion to support the weatherization program. Approximately $3.2 billion will go to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, $3.1 billion will go to state energy programs, and $4.5 billion will support the Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability Program.
