How does a home become certified?
Would you like to have a home certified? Contact us at the bottom of this page to get started.
Generally, the overall process for home certification is as follows:
A builder identifies a project for certification
Once the scoring process is complete, the builder works with us as the NAHB Research Center-Accredited Third-Party Verifier to have the construction and builder-assessed points reviewed
We seek documentation and perform a minimum of two inspections of the home. Upon confirmation of the requirements dictated by the points scored for the home (
see the National Green Building Program Verifier's Resource Guide), we then submit the project and required documentation to the NAHB Research Center, sole certifier for the national certification program. As Verifiers, we are individual home building industry professionals that confirm through a process of document review and on-site inspections that all the features and requirements specified by a particular builder are in place and correct.
- The NAHB Research Center reviews our Verifier's Report. Certificates are issued, and the home is added to the National Registry of Green Homes.

Interested in having your green home certified? Start by creating your design with the Green Scoring Tool. Once you are finished with your project scoring, Contact us as Your Verifier, and contact the NAHB National Green Building Program to start the certification process, which includes an application and fee paid to them to certify your new home. Then, Work with us as Your Verifier to have site and document inspections performed among other steps, before the home is Certified as a truly Green Home.
About the Program
The NAHB Green Building Program is your guarantee of an authentically green home that's built the way you want. Cost-effective, flexible and sensible. Make your home more resource and energy efficient with the NAHB National Green Building Program. Through the National Green Building Program, the National Association of Home Builders is helping move the practice of green building into the mainstream. Energy efficiency, water and resource conservation, sustainable or recycled products, and indoor air quality are increasingly incorporated into the everyday process of home building.
The National Green Building Program offers several resources and tools to help builders, remodelers, home building associations, and homeowners learn how to build green, and the benefits of doing so. According to a survey done in late 2007, the vast majority of residential builders and developers -- 90% -- are interested in participating in a voluntary green building certification program.
Published in 2005, the voluntary Guidelines cover seven areas, including:
Lot preparation and design,
Resource efficiency, - Energy efficiency,
- Water efficiency and conservation,
- Occupancy comfort,
- Indoor environmental quality, and
- Operation, maintenance and homeowner education.
These Guidelines are the basis for the Green Scoring Tool, but were also written for local organizations to use as a foundation for their own Green Building program, for easy customization to reflect local geographic and climate conditions.
The NAHB National Green Building Program Hotline at 877-NAHB-GRN (877-624-2476). The Hotline is available from 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM Eastern time to answer questions, address comments, and provide resources to professionals looking to build green.
A national certification program that enables builders across the country to assure their homes are green, even if no local program exists in their area.
